In early November I flew out to Botswana to visit the CC coaching team in Maun, grabbing the opportunity to finally see them in action after a long and sometimes painful year of lockdowns, travel interruptions and school closures. A year ago I had watched these guys work their way through the week-long online training program we had designed in collaboration with the Southern African Wildlife College and been impressed by their energy and enthusiasm – despite the long hours they were asked to spend listening to Zoom presentations in front of socially distanced computers.

Now I was excited to see how the coaches were getting along on the ground.

Our online course is designed to equip coaches with the knowledge needed to effectively deliver a Coaching Conservation program, including the necessary theoretical background in ecology, ethology, and pedagogy, all tailored to our ‘Learning from Wildlife’ teaching model. However, the secret ingredient is and always has been the ability of CC coaches to really inspire kids, ensuring every kid has the most fun and memorable experience possible, in order to motivate as much empathy for threatened wildlife as is possible.

Accordingly, we had always intended that alongside the online theory course, fully qualified CC coaches would also need to complete a practical examination that assessed their ability to actually deliver sessions to kids on the field. This was the assessment I was here to oversee, and so, a few days after I arrived in Maun, we visited Thitoyamokodi School for the coaches to deliver a Vulture RAP to the Standard 6 class and to try out delivery of our new We Are All Connected (WAAC) game.

The coaches were all eager to complete their qualification and show off their skills, but Head Coach, Tjipo Keaikitse, volunteered to be assessed first. Taking charge of the Vulture RAP, she quickly demonstrated all the energy and charisma we expect from CC coaches, together with a masterful grasp of the lesson’s content, and it was clear that there was not a huge amount for me to critique here. However, the best professionals are always looking to improve, and so we sat down later to discuss some areas where we agreed her delivery could be strengthened even further.

The WAAC game was more of a challenge, but this was undoubtedly down to the game’s design more than the coaches’ delivery and provided me with a different valuable lesson. Tjipo and I agreed to put our heads at the first opportunity to work on ways to improve how this game works and is understood, finding the best way to really convey our ‘We Are All Connected’ message.

A week later and we were at Disaneng School. This time, Coach Omolelo volunteered to lead the session – another Vulture RAP to a standard 6 class – and the coaching team also added some of the tweaks to the lesson we had discussed after last week. We changed the running order slightly to break up the longer ‘classroom’ elements and added music to build more energy into the session. The delivery felt noticeably stronger and the kids were buzzing. The coaches also seemed happy, rightly taking pride in a job well done.

Tjipo and Omolelo thus became our first two fully certified coaches in Maun. They have set the bar high. Now it’s up to the boys – Oscar, Rambo and Otlaathusa – to show what they can do!

At 6:30am on 13th June 2021 – far too early for a Sunday morning – and while much of Makhanda was either still partying or sleeping, a few of us started to gather for a mini adventure. A few months ago, our Albany Runners group had set ourselves a challenge – inspired by the Comrades Marathon we would do our own “Comrades Challenge” – hoping to break some personal distance records while raising awareness (and hopefully attracting some sponsorship!) for our favourite cause – Coaching Conservation!

The best thing about starting a run in the dark is the reward of a beautiful Eastern Cape sunrise and the chance of seeing wildlife as it starts its day. And this morning, we were not disappointed. Gemsbok, roan antelope, waterbuck, buffalo, impala, warthogs and a caravan of giraffes greeted us along the way to Kenton-upon-Sea.

Along the way we were joined by supporters and more runners. Five kilometres into our journey, Colin arrived with cokes, cold water, oranges, and some motivational and navigational advice! More support arrived 15 kilometres along the road to Kenton, as Sam and Juan arrived with their cheerful support crew Emily and Tasmin to commence their 45km challenge.

The final members of the team achieved the following distances:

Kennedy, Sam and Juan ran 45km (more than doubling previous personal distance records for Kennedy and Sam).

Pedro and Sinalo ran 57km (more than doubling Pedro’s previous distance record).

Peter (at 73 years young) ran 10km.

Sally ran 60km (extending her personal distance record).

Ghida ran 54km (a new personal best)

Kirsti and Viv ran 21km.

Despite the fact that it is a 500m drop from Grahamstown to Kenton this was NOT a downhill journey. Our running devices show that our elevation gain was 723m!

All Finished! With thanks to David, Colin, Cate, Emily and Tasmin for great support and Kirsti for much needed Boerie Rolls!

Please consider rewarding the team’s efforts in this challenge:

To support the Coaching Conservation project at Amakala and fund the training of three new coaches to join our this programme, helping teach children to understand how we are all connected and “Inspire Kids Who Care” you can donate here: https://www.givengain.com/cc/coaching-conservation–comrades-challenge/

After a few quiet months, when our activities remained curtailed by Covid, we were finally able to renew our fruitful collaboration with the safari operators at Natural Selection. We were met within the spectacular grove of huge baobab trees at Planet Baobab by the Natural Selection Community Liaison officer Tsitsi Mmolawa, and by the school Head, Environmental Education Teachers and the Standard 5 teachers from Gasebalwe Seretse Primary School in Gweta.

We spent 2 days (21st & 22nd April 2021) with the Standard 5 students, guiding them through the messages, games and activities involved in our newly designed Vulture RAP. 94 students attended these sessions and the kids hugely enjoyed the RAP, promising they would share the message with their families at home, just as we had hoped.

It’s always so rewarding to see the change in a child’s face after our sessions, knowing that they have learnt something new, and to hear them doing the CC respect cheer with happy voices is the best! These kids knew very little about vultures or their importance before we arrived and left knowing much more about how valuable vultures are and what we can learn from them (CC’s ‘Learning from Wildlife’ model). Most importantly the kids were inspired to want to find ways to help our endangered vultures.

We also took this opportunity to trial a new monitoring and evaluation questionnaire, with the results supporting our impression that the RAP had made a difference to the kids’ views. The students certainly became more interested in vultures, with those ranking vultures as their number 1 interest (ahead of seeing lions, elephants and giraffes) increasing from 11% to 26% after the RAP, while those who ranked vultures as the least interesting dropped from 44% to 28%. Kids were also more likely to consider vultures beautiful after the RAP, and in a novel attempt to measure assigned value, our survey revealed that the kids became more inclined to save vultures than chickens when given a hypothetical choice before and after our RAP.

We are very grateful to the Primary Education Officer Central District, Mr Isaiah for being so accommodating in these uncertain times, and allowing us to safely interact with the students and teachers, who made sure all hands were sanitized and all masks worn properly. We were impressed and hope we can go back to Gweta and work with Gasebalwe Seretse Primary school again as well as perhaps reaching Gweta Primary school in the near future.

Testimonials:

Lefika, 10 years old

“Today I learnt that we need to protect vultures because they are our clean-up crew.”

Sedilame, 11 years old

“Today I learnt a new word: ‘Scavenger’”

Ms. Itumeleng Perfect Moswasi – Deputy Head, Gasebalwe Seretse Primary School

“We truly appreciate you coming here today, our kids have definitely learnt a lot from Coaching Conservation. I especially like the activity books you have given them, there is a lot to learn from them, not only conservation but language and writing as well. Thank you.”

CC’s new circle nudges and mural by the FNB ATM in Maun

With Covid cases on the rise in Maun and the pandemic impacting on all of us, Coaching Conservation has continued to seek ways to help protect our community and reiterate CC’s core environmental messages which resonate so strongly in the context of this virus. To this end, we recently conducted a 3-day survey in the streets of Maun, focusing on areas where people naturally seemed to gather, such as at ATM machines and at supermarkets. Sticking to a safe distance and following our own Covid-safe protocols, we questioned a random sample of the population to find out their concerns about the current pandemic, identify cultural challenges to reducing transmission, and get an idea of public understanding about the virus.

There were two main behaviours that we noticed: people not wearing masks consistently or correctly, and also not social distancing. Could these lapses be the reason new cases were increasing? There were other possible problems we identified, such as large gatherings continuing at funerals and weddings, where Covid protocols seem to be ignored. A few of our respondents also brought to our attention that there was a type of fear or discomfort that stopped people from policing each other, even if it they knew it was the right thing to do. We were told that people seem to take it personally when they’re asked to keep a social distance or wear their mask correctly and could become offended or rude in some instances.

We then decided that a good way to address some of these issues would be to deploy “nudges” in places where there are queues. With the support of Mr Markus (a former member of parliament for Ngamiland who totally understands and shares our concerns), we gained permission to use his shopping complex in Maun for our proposed nudges. Nudges are simple cues in our environment that influence us to behave in a certain way. The idea of nudges rests on the theory that behaviour is not only based on conscious thoughts and decisions, but that it can be unconsciously guided by choice architecture – the way that options are presented to people.

We called upon our local artists once again to help us turn our nudges into aesthetically pleasing and educational messages. After some discussion, we settled on messages that covered the key areas of concern and which linked clearly to CC’s mantra: Respect Yourself, Respect Each Other, Respect Your Environment. The artists then incorporated these messages into a mural highlighting some common mistakes our survey suggested people were making while they also came up with a circular design with footprints in the centre and one message per circle, with each circle drawn onto the pavement 2 metres apart from its neighbour to encourage people to maintain social distancing in queues. Our messages were:

  1. WASH YOUR HANDS – COVID LOVES DIRTY SURFACES!

  2. BE SMART – STAY 2M APART

  3. MY MASK PROTECTS YOU – YOUR MASK PROTECTS ME

  4. KEEP SAFE – KEEP YOUR DISTANCE

  5. IT’S OK TO SAY  “A RE KATOGANE”

Now we will monitor behaviour and see if our nudges have made a difference!

After Coaching Conservation staff helped install a water-saving Tippy Tap at Mathiba Primary School, we recently went back to conduct a post-installation survey and see what changes our nudges had created. We had originally done a pre-installation survey to identify the children’s habits and behavior with hand washing, which was a concern. This follow-up survey was intended to monitor these same things and evaluate any behavioral changes that had followed our intervention.

We did the survey amongst 3 classes: Standard 2, 4 and 6, in order to get good representation from lower and upper primary students. The kids’ general knowledge about the virus, social distancing, the need for masks and hand washing was very good, even before we installed the Tippy-Tap. However, with both Pre and post-surveys complete, we identified the following conclusions:

  • However, it seems like our hand washing stations and nudging campaign did have some impact, increasing the overall proportion of kids who washed their hands after visiting the toilets.
  • We also appear to have raised awareness about the fact that the virus cannot travel on its own, and that people can spread the virus even if they don’t have symptoms – both significant results!
  • Interestingly, we also appear to have successfully relayed the message that bushmeat is not safe – an important spin off from this campaign.

Our main objective was for the students to realize how “We are All Connected” and to encourage them to respect themselves and each other by washing their hands and reducing the spread of Covid. We hope we can carry on with this initiative in more schools.

Meeting teachers and Heads of schools throughout Ngamiland during our distribution of “The Coronavirus Survival Kit for the family” has provided a welcome opportunity for Coaching Conservation to promote our “We Are All Connected” campaign. Creating such personal relationships can lead to a better understanding of our mission and often helps promote willingness to embrace challenges in the future. It can also help identify community needs, as it did with Mathiba I Memorial Primary School in Sedia ward, Maun.

After Mathiba Primary School expressed concern that few students reported they were washing their hands after using the toilets, we conducted questionnaires in 3 classes: Standard 2, standard 4 (lower primary) and standard 6 (upper primary), with an average of 30 students in each class. We found that the 2 lower primary classes knew significantly fewer COVID-19 facts and information, whereas the upper primary seemed better versed and more aware of the facts.

However, the majority of students (83%) in the three classes did know how to wash their hands and for how long. Knowing this made it clear that the issue was not how or when to wash your hands but accessibility of the taps, as the students did not have a wash station anywhere near the toilets. The nearest tap to the toilet was at least 50m away from the toilets and the students all agreed it was tedious and not encouraging for the taps to be so far away. Sometimes they find themselves getting distracted and forget to wash their hands.

We knew that using “nudges” has proved to be effective in promoting behavioral change elsewhere, as a study carried out in Bangladesh showed that hand washing with soap rose from 4% to 74% in 6 weeks after handwashing stations were built in visible, easy‐to‐reach locations, with brightly-colored paths leading from toilets to the handwashing station, and footprints and handprints painted on the path and around the hand-washing station. We copied this scheme and used colourful slabs which were painted with encouraging messages leading from the school toilets to a newly constructed tippy tap and washing basin station. We will return at the end of the school term for a follow up to evaluate the intervention impact.

The newly formed relationship with Mathiba school head and its staff has proved to be worthwhile for both CC and Mathiba School. We are in a position where we have created constructive rapport and hope this will help promote the reintroduction of Coaching Conservation’s programmes in Botswana when interactions with the students are possible once more. For now, the students are happy washing their hands at their new hand washing station and have begun absorbing our Respect messages, linking their own personal hygiene with respect for themselves and other people around them!

During our successful Coronavirus Survival Kit campaign, a new community need was presented to us. Mathiba Primary School expressed concern that few students were washing their hands after they had used the toilets, due mainly to the fact that there were no washing basins near the toilets. Coaching Conservation quickly stepped in and agreed to trial a behavior change project at the school, aimed at promoting hand-washing routines. CC has now donated and erected a wash station near the toilets and created a colourful walkway using paving slabs, leading from the toilets to the wash station. We put positive reinforcement messages on the slabs (‘nudges”) encouraging students to wash their hands and, keeping to our core messages, to be responsible and respectful of both themselves and others. We will return at the end of term for a follow up to evaluate the intervention’s impact as well as to collect the “We Are all Connected“ competition posters that were distributed to all senior primary students.

In all these projects, we have been supported by local youth businesses and individuals. A talented
welder, Odumetse Dikatholo designed the tap stands for the handwashing area. We also hired two local artists, Prince Moyo and Elijah Obonye Molatole to decorate and paint the slabs.

Meanwhile, we have not forgotten our plans to launch our first accredited Train-the Trainer course in collaboration with the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC). This first course, originally scheduled for April, had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Like so many organisations around the world we have been turning to online learning, and have spent the past months repacking the course material to allow for an online delivery. It is now almost ready, and our first online course is scheduled to be delivered in October. There will always remain a practical component of the training which can only be done with kids present, but we hope to use this online training resource to accredit coaches from SAWC, Goodwork Foundation and Maun in the theoretical grounding required to coach our lessons, so that they are ready to do their practical training as soon as school activities open up again.

Managing the local situation when the lockdown was eased also presented challenges for us with staff returning to work from various locations, but we continue with social distancing, wearing masks and sanitizing to ensure we are doing all we can to keep everyone safe. Our vital partnership to conserve the environment and spread positive messages must continue despite the difficult and challenging times we all are experiencing.

As we strive to look forward and find ways to adapt, we are increasingly aware of the real impact this global health and economic situation has had on our funding and have initiated new ways to raise funds for our programs. Globally we are working on our building awareness of our work through our new media channels and locally, we are hosting a jumble sale of collected donated items of furniture, electronics, clothes, toys and books to help raise conservation funds.

We could not do the things we do without the generous continuing support of all our funders and donors, and we say thanks again for your enduring support.  Friends like you have sustained us over the years and ensured the success of Wild Entrust Africa and its projects.  Not only is it imperative that we continue to protect the wildlife resources of this unique region with its globally important wetland and world heritage site status, your gifts are now more important than ever to enable us to maintain basic operations and salaries for all of our employees so they do not join the ever increasing statistic of the unemployed and destitute in Botswana, and become part of the problem rather than the solution.

Every little bit helps and comes with our grateful thanks as well as our guarantee that every dollar will be well spent.

As part of CC’s Coronavirus campaign, we have been busy renovating and upgrading the Conservation Resource Centre in Maun. Once school activities are resumed, we look forward to welcoming back conservation clubs and community classes to use the variety of conservation resources on offer. As part of the project, we are improving playing fields, restocking the library, updating the computer room and repairing the tents for some great new overnight camps we are designing.

As this is a community project, we invited community members to help, instilling a sense of ownership and belonging in the Resource Centre. We were delighted to be approached by a group of local youth artists (The Art Times) who were working on a project of their own called “tag Maun”. They are creating murals in different parts of Maun to empower artists and give Maun a welcome face lift . They willingly donated their time and creativity to our Centre and have designed four big and bright murals for our walls. They are incredibly talented and cleverly captured our core messages of “Inspiring kids who care”, “Learning from wildlife”, “We are all Connected” and “Respect Yourself, Respect others, Respect your environment!

While they were busy painting and chatting, we learned that one of the artists, Elijah Molatole, was a Coaching Conservation Kid Who Cares ten years ago, and it was this memorable experience that encouraged them to reach out to help us now!

I sat down with Elijah to hear about his experience with Coaching Conservation:

“I was raised in Maun and attended Letsholathebe Primary School. As a primary school student, I was a very energetic and enthusiastic young boy. I was also social and interactive with both students and teachers. I think this is what led to my participation in many of the programs introduced to the school at the time – one of these programs being the Coaching Conservation experience in 2010 at Maun Sports Complex. The experience was an inspiration to me because, at the time I had what were the early realizations of my dream of being an influencer and impact driver in my community. Meeting Lucas Radebe who was our football idol, Prince Harry and Joe Jonas was just the spark I needed to drive my interest in becoming a person of impact. The experience showed me the possibility of achieving the dreams I had of becoming a driver of change and making a positive impact in the world.

One other thing I got out of my Coaching Conservation experience 10 years ago was the encouragement of my participative spirit which was an important factor in my personal growth, coming into the business and entrepreneurial  environment, because through participation I learned the necessary skills to interact and work with others to achieve collective goals and this all started with Coaching Conservation!

I also got a chance to learn about animals like the wild dogs and the cheetah amongst others. This made me more aware of these animals, their behavior and their natural environment. This later in my life gave rise to the love and respect that I now have for animals and my interest in the conservation efforts that are being introduced and implemented. This is the main reason I had no question in my head about working with Coaching Conservation again.

Thank you, Elijah, for becoming a Kid Who Cares and donating your time today to inspiring other kids to care! We love hearing these stories, as they give remind us of the impact that the CC program is having in our community and how we must keep working, offering our Learning from Wildlife programs to as many kids as possible.
